The successful candidate will provide technical substation engineering expertise to projects, as well as technical leadership and guidance within the organization and to the client. This role will also support the business development efforts of the substation and power division by identifying new business opportunities through existing client contacts.
Duties and Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
•Prepare appropriate technical documentation and designs for substation layouts, plot plans, bus elevations, ground grid, structures, foundations, and control/switchgear buildings to meet specific project requirements
•Complete calculations and studies to support the design, including grounding, lightning, lighting, AC/DC Load Studies, Station Service and UPS sizing, insulation coordination, bus deflection, underground cable, conductor and arrestor sizing
•Prepare/check completed material lists for projects, including but not limited to item descriptions, specifications and quantities, for the Project Manager in a timely manner
•Develop equipment and apparatus specifications suitable for supporting design, and issuing vendor RFQ’s
•Review vendor documentation and drawings to ensure constructability, operability, and compliance with equipment specifications
•Liaise with Project Manager and clients to resolve technical and project issues
•Follow and apply industry and client standards to specific applications
•Follow applicable quality procedures (e.g. internal electronic and hard-copy project document and filing standards)
•Review and check drawings to ensure designs meet technical needs of the client and adhere to industry standards for reliability and safety
•Quality control of designs produced by junior staff
•Provide technical direction, mentoring and training to junior technical staff
•Manage and take accountability for the quality of own work product
•Professionally authenticate/stamp reports and drawings as required
•Prepare construction instructions and scopes of work
•Support construction and commissioning field activities, which may include on-site support.
•Maintain current knowledge in relevant technical area of expertise as well as in current industry standards
•Meet agreed-upon deadlines and schedules outlined by Project Managers and Discipline Lead
•Appropriately manage competing priorities and proactively seek assistance from the Discipline Lead when priorities and/or schedules appear to conflict
•Proactively manage and continue personal professional development activities
•Maintain membership in good standing with the appropriate professional engineering or technology association
•Represent company in relevant industry groups as agreed with supervisor
The Ideal Candidate will have the following Skills and Qualifications:
•Degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering, or Diploma in Electrical or Civil Engineering Technology
•Eligible for registration with APEGA or ASET
•5-10 years of directly related experience; high voltage North American utility experience will receive higher consideration
•Possess strong written and oral communication skills
•Able to work effectively both independently under minimal supervision and as a member of a team
•Previous experience with MicroStation or AutoCAD
•3D drafting experience would be an asset
